Forced to make a living as a single parent - at a time when being a working mother was looked at askance by society - she bravely, and ultimately successfully, set up in business as an antiques dealer. She at first specialised in porcelain, but fell in love with the complexity and beauty of those articles of utility which are known as scientific instruments.
